Just a heads up for anyone wanting this done or if you have been sitting on the fence about getting one.  I am moving out of the area in May 2010.  If you want this done, please get with me soon.

Please don't wait till a storm is knocking on our door to call me.  Because, I will not be able to get to you.

It really is the best, safest, only way to go if you have a small to medium sized portable generator.  Not too mention, I was bombarded last season when storms where out there and I could not get to everyone at the same time.

I can install a transfer switch that will handle a 30 amp or less portable generator on 100 amp service for $350.00.  This includes materials and labor.  This means that you need to have a 100 amp or under main breaker outside of your home for this setup to work for you.  Usually, most 7500 watt and below generators output 30 amps to thier 220V outlet.  Most portable generators above 7500 watts output 50 amps to thier 220V outlet.  If you have a 50 amp portable generator, it's just slightly more due to wire sizes and outlet amperage ratings being more.  This covers a standard installation of the switch and outlet next to your meter box.  If the switch or outlet needs to be located farther away due to other components (telephone box, cable box) mounted in the way, the price will be slightly more due to extra wire and conduit needed.  Just give me a call and I'll come take a look for free.  No charge for me to come take a look and give you any info.

This switch will allow you to switch from gulf power to your generator in a safe way. It will allow you to choose which circuits you want to power and you can change those circuits at any time in your house sub panel.

I have been in the Electrical field for 10+ years now.  Did commercial electrical work for 6 years and then went and got my Electrical Engineering degree.   I got out of the construction side of things and now sit behind a desk all day. But I still do side jobs like this from time to time to help folks out and make some extra fishing money.

I have installed one for FelixH, dockmaster, LyinDog, JoeBuck, Tdevil76, RUSTY, Promark, opus68, Tricktoo, dugf007, pirate@40something, Beached,  and many other people that found me on the forum for references etc...

You can PM for more details or if you want me to come take a look, free of charge, at possibly installing one.

Here is a picture of the setup on my house with a paintshop label job so you can see what is what.

Jon did a great job on my switch install!  Very clean job, looks great!  I might not need it this year, but the extra peace of mind is well worth it.  Thanks Jon

Not even close to hurricane season, but I figured I would give this a bump for anyone that would like to be prepared.  Last year I did not post this till the season started and I was bombarded with work and I just want to get this out there for anyone that would like this done before the season actually starts.  Last year I had people calling me up wanting it done right then and there and I couldn't because of the backlog of work.

$335.00 covers all material and labor for the basic install to handle a 7500 watt, 30 amp or less generator.  Just shoot me a PM or call me up on my cell to come take a look.

Bump for you, Jon.

Jon does some very good work! Very organized and clean install, which is the way I like things done. Thankfully, I haven't had a need to use the switch he installed for me, but it's there for when I do need it.

Jon did a great job for me.  I have not had to use the switch yet (thankfully) but I do have peace of mind knowing that it is there.

Thanks for the plug fellas.  I just wanted to get this out there way before the season starts this time.  Last time, I had too many to do in such a short time.  This type of work is usually the type that people want to get done right before the big one and I can't get to them in time.  So if your thinking of doing this get with me before the time comes where you need it.

I had Jon come and put in a switch for me back in October and never tried it until today.  Lost power about 1300 for about 4 hours.  Hooked up the generator and everything worked great.  Thanks for a great job Jon.

Highly recommend Knot A Yacht.

Thanks for the kind words and plug Rusty.  It's amazing at how simple it is to hook your generator up with the switch isn't it?  No more bare wires and no more worries about backfeeding the power pole.  Keeps everyone safe.

Installed another transfer switch for a forum member this morning.  Get in touch with me before the hurricane season rush if you would like to have one installed.

I seen JOhns work at Rusty's house, nice clean installation, and Rusty seemed happy as heck about when the power went out how easy it was for him!

Thanks for the plug Clay.  I guess your a nice guy after all.  You still can't shoot fish.  But your good at that little head camera thingy.

Back to the subject: I am a little anal when it comes to my work and I like it to look nice as well as function as described.  I can't stand ugly electrical work especially when it's located somewhere like the outside of your house for everyone to see.

sorry for the amateur questions , but i'm considering building a house in orange beach.

how big of a generator would i need to power the entire house(3500sqft)?

what would that cost?

how long will it run before needing more fuel?

thanks in advance

June 1st is approaching fast guys.  I don't wish a storm on this area for anything, but this switch will make you life that much easier when and if the time comes to hook up that portable generator.  Not to mention it's the only safe, legal way to hook your generator up to your house wiring.  I hope that no one ever has to use a switch that I install because of a storm.  But the fact of life here on the gulf coast unfortunately goes against those wishes.  And if you haven't already, get those generators out and make sure they are serviced and oil is changed and ready to go.

Give me a call if you would like me to come take a look and talk to you about installing one.  No charge for my time to come take a look.

Getting more calls and have two (maybe 3) more forum members that I will be doing installs for.  I am backed up about 2 weeks right now with people that I need to get to.  So if you want one done, give me a shout.

Jon came by today and put in a transfer switch. We hooked it up and tried it out and it worked splendidly. Thanks Jon. If anyone needs a transfer switch installed, Jon's great at it. Mine was pretty tricky because my house is 35 years old, I have a lot of extra electrical boxes on my house for pool pumps etc, and my main box was pretty packed. If you need a switch, give Jon a call. Don't let Ike get here before you wait to call.

I have got quite a few forum members installed over the last two weeks.  For those that are waiting, I am trying my best to get to you as soon as I can.  I have to be out of town all next week for a last minute work trip and will be able to resume switch installs once I get back.

Thanks for your patience.

I have a newbie question for you Jon! What exactly should I expect to be able to run with a 5500 generator without frying the thing? I know it won't run the whole house but, could I run the central a/c for a few hours and then switch to the hot water heater for a while or do those 2 things draw too much?

Man that is a great price, I was looking at the Kit Home Depot sells and it is $300.00 just by itself.  Way to go man.

Central AC - No.

Hot water heater - Yes, with everything else off.

I run two refrigerators, one stand up freezer, 5000 BTU window ac unit, Lights as I need them, Computer, TV, Fans.  All off of my 5500 running watts generator.

I am still out in this crazy state they call California.  Man it's hot in this stupid desert.  I should be back in town by this weekend and get back to installing the remaining forum members that are waiting on me.
