ive never caught tuna before and dont know much about what you should and shouldnt use and i was wondering whats the biggest yellowfin you could catch on a 6/0 with 100mono on the bottom and 80 braid on top and a 4/0 with 50 braid

I have seen PLENTY of 100+ pound yellowfin caught on 4/0 and 6/0 penn senators. Braid backing, mono leader. I also know of a 200#er that was caught over in Venice a few Lump seasons ago on a diamond jig. Wild. Anyways, your question is somewhat misworded-technically if it didn't know it was hooked, you could bring in a 300# YFT. But ya you should be fine with that setup, especially on the fish less than 100. Back in the day, our tuna setups consisted of 4/0s spooled with 80 braid connected to a short 36" wire leader used for diamond jigging around the rigs. This minimized lost jigs to the sharks. Nowadays, we use the 50wides for chunking with 120# leader, maybe 4 feet or so. Kite fishing you can get away with much heavier leader because the leader stays out of the water the whole time (pre-strike). PM me for any more help. I like them tunas

| I've fished out of Venice before when we caught a 182,172 and 135 lb yft, hooked within a few minutes of each other and landed within an hour of each other on TLD25's with 50 lb mono and no leader. Boat capt. told us we couldn't AJ fish because tackle was too small. So I see no problem. BA

alright thats cool i had no clue if they were big enough or not, well its not coming up but we're planning a trip in the future....was just wondering if we needed bigger set ups or not, thanks for all the feed back

just depends what you are doing. a lot of first time tuna fishers are perfectly content with blackfin, which from what i understand, are relatively in close this time of year (the edge. i dont tuna fish east of here this time of year). either way, you definately have enough heavy artillery for them. if youre heading to ram, horn mountain, and beyond, or god forbid the lump (IDEALLY!) you should still be ok. but it probably wouldnt hurt to have some really heavy artillery available if you get into the big ones thick...
