I have a 2000 Yamaha 150hp carborated 2 stroke. It has a small oil tank on the motor, quart or less, and a 2 1/2 Gal main tank, that supplies oil to the small tank on the motor. The problem is oil is pumping all the time. Engine smokes and oil is all over the inside of the cowling and will drain out if the motor is tilted up. Makes a slick on the water. I have had the switch replaced that supposedly shuts the pump on and off to keep the oil between the two lines on the small tank. This did not solve the problem, it still does the same thing. Would appreciate any suggestions for what else could be causing this problem. I had another oil problem a couple months ago, but that turned out to be the plastic turnbuckle on the end of the rod that went onto the oil pump. Fixed that and had one good trip before this happened.

Thanks

Cptskinny

Go to The Hull Truth and search for "making oil" IIRC this is a common problem for certain models and they had several threads about it.

Check the barrel fuse on the side of the motor near the solinoid.

Are you saying the pump in the Aux tank (2.5 gal) is constantly pumping oil to the main tank on the motor? There are a couple of things it could be, float switch in the main tank, short in the wiring, or bad computer. Glad to look at it if you are near Navarre.

When you say the motor smokes, do you mean more than normal or that it just smokes. If the pump is running all the time it will over flow the tank on the motor and SOS is right about a short or bad float switch. Need to know exactly what it's doing before we can help much.

You have a bad oil tank level sender or oil monitor computer, or bad trim sensor which feeds oil computer. We can diagnose and repair it.

I was helping a neighbor with a similar problem a few months ago and as a result of our troubleshooting I am curious how a trim sensor will cause over pumping. I thought it prevented the pump from running if the motor was trimmed up to a certain position. Please explain.

Based on our research I would go with SOS.

I have had the oil tank float switch changed and that did not help.

If you changed the engine float switch then it is either wiring or computer. Is your "Return to port switch" part of the compter or seperate?  I may have a new computer that I will let go cheap. I would be need the model number of your motor to make sure.

If in fact it is a 2000 model,,,, and the oil tank on the engine is filled all the way to the top, then the float switch  on the engine tank is bad... this switch is the only one that turns the pump on and off.... this system PBS has been the downfall of very many yamaha technicians... if the pump is running then the circuit is good... give me a call on monday,, ill talk to you about it....

Most of those will have a dead spot on the switch built into the engine tank oil float. I have come across this many times. Other things that may be your problem is........ if the engine tank float has been removed for any reason, the filter screen may have been put in wrong and has bound the float so it will not go up to turn the pump off, or the filter screen is not oriented correctly on the float sensor and the breather hole is not allowing the oil to rise and lift the float. As Kenny said, many people will misdiagnose the Yamaha oil system mainly due to thier unfamiliarity with the system.
