can I get rid of the port / starboard switch and connect gas line to new fitting so tanks will burn evenly. If so do you have pic or diagram to proper way to connect.Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Probably not a good idea. If one goes empty before the other, your pump will suck air and you would be dead in the water. There are valves that that you can install that give you the option of port, starboard and both. Another way, if you want to draw from both you can install a shut off valve on each tank. That way if one is empty you can shut off.

you must have valves or additonal tank leveling plumbing, or you will SUCK AIR. If you starve an engine for fuel under load you will DAMAGE the motor.
