Just wondering how difficult it is to replace the steering cable and gear box on a Mercury 150 outboard on 19ft. Trophy 1998. Looking at buying Teleflex 4.2 Rotary system(it's not hydraulic). I will clean the steering tube while it's apart. The kit states that it has easy to follow instructions and just wanted any imput on degree of difficulty and helpfull hints. Is Teleflex the best product?

Thanks for imput

Should be pretty easy to replace.. teleflex is a good set up.

After you remove the steering wheel there should be 3 screws on the bottom holding the gearbox to your console... spray them with PB blaster if they look rusted or coroded and whille that soaks in go to the motor and loosen the nut at the end of the cable and take the nut off the transfer bar so the cable is not attached to anything.

then pull the cable out of the tube (sometimes if its stubburn you can turn the wheel hard to the left to pull the cable through part of the way.

Once you get the cable end out take loose the gearbox and replace the entire assbly.

bar any coroded rusted bolts and the cable sticking in the tube the whole job should take you about a hr start to finish.

loosen the nut at the end of the cable and take the nut off the transfer bar so the cable is not attached to anything.

That transfer bar is called a "Draglink."

I'm with Kenny on that. I think the splash well will prevent the cable from coming all the way out. Other than that it can be a simple job.
