What a day to be on the water! Fishing is great, and we had our fill of king mackerel, sharks, and Jack Crevalle. Mark, Bob, Greg, and Mike were all in town on business and took a day to experience our great fishery. Mark has been out with me before fishing for Red Snapper; this time he wanted to try his luck on some toothy kings. Well, it was a day to remember for sure. We started out the trip by slow drifting live baits about 4 miles off the beach, and within seconds of letting out our third bait, got slammed by a nice schoolie king.

After a few hours, we had seven good strikes and landed four keeper kings for the ice chest.

Mark and the crew were enjoying the light tackle action of king fishing, but what came up next was about to test their endurance and my tackle. By the tail end of our trip, we had well over 15 strikes on kings and had kept about six, and had even boated two small 3ft sharks that had hung around checking out our baits.

It was the last hour and the seas were getting a little sloppy. I told the crew that we would slow troll the last 40 minutes to see if we could get a few more strikes.  I spotted a few Bonita busting baits not too far away, but what I didn’t know then is that mixed in and under the school of Bonita lurked some monster Jack Crevalle. I trolled around the school of Jacks and then turned the boat to the left to make my baits come right through the school. Within seconds we had four knockdowns and do I ever mean knockdowns.

 All four reels were screaming that sweet sound only a jack can scare up. One of the jacks, (or possibly a king), snapped the line, so we had just three fish fighting at once. During the battle, Mark, Bob, and Greg were all groaning as they worked each of their fish. As they got a little line back the fish would take more. It seemed that it would be a never-ending battle, but Mark showed his fish who was boss, as he was the first to land his jack.

 During this time I re-rigged and put out a bait for Mike to hook up on jack or whatever else might be interested in his offering. It didn’t take long and his reel was again singing that sweet sound of fish on the other end. Not too long after Mark landed his, Greg boated his, so now we just had Bob and Mike left to battle their fish.

Bob had been fishing his fish well over 15 minutes, and his arms were beginning to wear out, but he was hanging in there like a trooper, but unfortunately after a few more minutes his fish got off when the hooks pulled. Bob wasn’t too disappointed, because he was spent! Mike was still busy fishing his, and after another ten minutes, he had his fish boat side. He collapsed on the front deck, and admitted that he had never fought a fish that hard in his life.

 Just before we hooked up with the jacks, I was telling them about how hard jacks fight, and that, pound for pound, they are one if not the strongest inshore / nearshore species. Well, my crew certainly got a taste of how great Pensacola nearshore fishing is in June. Not only did we have a great day fishing, but we even had the Pensacola Blue Angels flying over us doing practice runs for their upcoming show.
I look forward to the next outing with Mark and his crew. They are a fun bunch. Tight Lines.
